Welcome to Walkden Sixth Form Centre

As Centre Principal, I would like to thank you for your interest in Walkden Sixth Form Centre. I hope that you find this brochure informative and that you will come along to an open event to meet our staff and discuss how we can help you get into the university or career of your choice.

The centre specialises in vocational training and has excellent facilities to ensure that you are trained to industry standard. Facilities include a brand new training restaurant, The Glass House, which opened in September 2012, animal rooms with a dog grooming parlour, a fitness suite and boxing ring, as well as hair, beauty and media make-up salons. Our Animal Management Department has a large range of small mammals and reptiles, but we also have our own pigs and chickens that the students care for. Our equine courses are primarily delivered at Ryders Farm which has many horses, stables and a riding arena to give you the best hands-on experience possible.

The centre has a history of success and for many years has achieved a 100% advanced vocational pass rate. This is achieved by the staff supporting each and every student with their needs and ensuring that we understand their goals. We have regular contact with parents to ensure that students stay on track and are exceeding their targets. We are a very friendly and supportive centre and we put on a lot of fun activities to reward your hard work and success. We have excellent contacts with industry professionals and this ensures that, as a centre of vocational study, we can be in the very best position to get you into the university of your choice or into employment in this very competitive environment. Some courses include work placements and for those that do not, we can work with you to gain work experience that will assist you in the future. There are strong partnerships in place with the North West NHS Trusts as part of our nursing cadets scheme, and the army, navy and police force as part of the public services course. Within animal care we have links with veterinary practices, animal sanctuaries and zoos.

External visits are also a regular feature of college. We work with students to enter competitions within their area of study and this has resulted in many students being crowned ‘the best in their category’ in major competitions. For example, our catering students recently showcased their talent at WorldSkills. Our students really get behind fundraising initiatives and have raised thousands for many great causes.

Walkden Sixth Form Centre is located on Walkden Road in Worsley. It is easily accessible by using the free college bus service or public transport. Walkden Train Station is just five minutes’ walk away and the buses stop immediately outside the centre.

We hope that you will join us at one of our open events and let us show you around the college and tell you what we have to offer you in the all-important decisions that you will be making for your future career. In the meantime you can find out more information about the Walkden Sixth Form Centre on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
