Students Go the Extra Mile for Sports Relief

26 March 2012

Over 150 Salford City College students donned their running shoes in aid of Sport Relief on Friday 23rd March.

100 Students from the college’s De La Salle and Walkden Sixth Form Centres were invited to participate in the Media City Sport Relief Mile which was started by HRH Queen Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh during their official opening tour of the Media City site. Students from a variety of subjects, including Sport, Business, Public Services and Health and Social Care all took part wearing I love Salford City College t-shirts, colourful face paints created by the college’s Hair & Beauty students and brandishing union jack flags to mark the occasion.

Health and Social Care student, Matthew Strode-Jennings said “I’ve done the Sport Relief Mile before at Eccles Sixth Form College, it’s a good cause so I wanted to do it again; I’ve done the Great Manchester Run three times too!”

Fellow student, Ainslee Brannagan, was looking forward to seeing The Queen “I love the Health and Social Care course I am doing at Salford City College, and wanted to do the run as it can be part of my assignment, as well as being a good cause to support. It’s the first time I’ve done anything like this for Sport Relief and have been doing some training. Hopefully I’ll get to see The Queen and see us on TV later on tonight.”

Not to be outdone, 80 Foundation students from Eccles Sixth Form Centre embarked on their own Sport Relief Mile around the local community. Some of the students have physical disabilities and so travelling the mile was an amazing achievement. On return to college, students were then invited to drench tutors Becky Doherty, John Edgar and Paula Ridings with water balloons, all in aid of the charity.

Sue Thomas, Tutor at Eccles Sixth Form Centre, said; “We had a wonderful time doing the Sport Relief Mile around Eccles, the weather was just glorious and it really made walking such a long distance an enjoyable experience. At one point we were escorted by a young police officer, which made us feel like real VIP’s for the day! A great big well done to all of the staff and students for being involved and supporting such a great cause I’m really proud of them all; and also a thank you to Becky, John and Paula for being such good ‘sports’ with the water balloons!”
